If you’re looking for something interesting to do before the Autumn programme begins, our Summer Creative Writing Workshop is a great way to try something new without a long commitment.
Come and join us for a new take on memoir, poetry and fiction. We’ll explore the connections between reality and the imagination. Using a wide variety of prompts and text from established writers, we’ll set you off. Then it’s up to you. Banish the blank page! For new and experienced writers. Starts Tuesday 18th August.
What to expect from the Creative Writing Workshop
This summer Creative Writing Workshop is designed to give you the opportunity to start your writing journey or develop your writing further. It is a chance to immerse yourself in writing for three and half days, Tuesday 18 August to Thursday from 10 – 4, Friday 10 – 1. Don’t worry, we have plenty of breaks for coffee and lunch!
How the days will be structured
We divide the day into blocks alternating between the two of us. We provide a variety of prompts and feedback. We’ll talk about technique and suggest writing exercises followed by read rounds. No-one is expected to read if they don’t want to. It can be useful for the students to receive helpful and constructive comments.
What you’ll be learning
We will be working with memoir, fiction and poetry. This provides an opportunity to work with genres the students may not have tried before. We’ll start with memoir, then work further into fiction. We have a session on poetry and will look at the work of modern poets and explore free verse. It won’t be like school.
The students will also learn about craft, the skills that writers use to make their work stand out. We will be sharing extracts from contemporary memoir and fiction.
The main objectives of the Creative Writing Workshop are to encourage new writers and more experienced writers to work in whatever genre that suits them best, and to give them confidence and awareness of writing techniques. Most importantly we want the students to enjoy the experience. We work hard to develop a relaxed and productive atmosphere.

We are both experienced tutors with degrees in Creative Writing from Birmingham University.
