October Literary Festival Brochure

We’ve got a fantastic line up of free writing sessions taking place at the Percival Guildhouse as part of Rugby’s Literary Festival this October. The sessions are delivered by experienced writers, some of whom also teach courses at the Percival Guildhouse. They are all free of charge and you can book online at Eventbrite

The Flash Fiction Workshop and Story Writing with Little Pixie Publishing are already sold out but there are still spaces on:

Behind the Scenes: Saturday 4 October 1pm – 2pm

Two local writers – Connie Ramsay Bott and Marg Roberts share the secrets behind the inspiration and writing of their novels, from first ideas to publication. This workshop is aimed at adults.

Marg’s novel, A Time for Peace is set in World War One. Can Stefan, a Serb soldier, and Ethel, a British nurse succeed in rescuing 30,000 army cadets by taking them out of the country in the worst Balkan winter?

Connie’s novel, Girl without Skin takes you to a lake in Michigan in 1965. Stories of the lives of both children and adults intertwine, through fear, tragedy, and self-discovery.

How to write for Young Adults: Saturday 4 October 2pm – 3pm

Writing for young adults is about more than just choosing a teenage protagonist. It’s about capturing the heart, struggles, and spirit of a generation. In this talk, young adult author Shelley Wilson explores what makes young adult fiction unique, how to create authentic characters, and the themes that resonate most with younger readers. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your young adult voice, you’ll leave with practical tips, fresh inspiration, and a deeper understanding of what it takes to connect with young audiences and write unforgettable coming-of-age stories. This talk is aimed at adults and teenagers.

Telling the Truth: how to write about your life, for you and for others: Saturday 4 October 3pm – 4pm

Everyone has a story. But before we tell it to to others, we must tell it to ourselves. This session explores how we can begin to write the truth about our lives, where to start, and how to take care of yourself as you do. This session is ideal for those curious about memoir, and a welcome space for writers at any stage. Come with your pen and notebook.
